T32 Interdisciplinary Cancer Research (IDCR)
Faculty Participants
The following details the expectations asked of faculty members participating in the IDCR training program, which includes teaching core curriculum, mentoring students, supporting program activities, and attending events.
Coursework
- Participate in teaching the core curriculum when requested. For most faculty this will mean:
- Supervise journal club for one quarter once every 3-4 years
- Present 20 min talk on your research in journal club once every 2-3 years
- Participate in teaching the core curriculum when requested. For most faculty this will mean:
Mentoring
- Propose and guide projects. Ensure students are making good progress towards publication of projects with a cancer focus.
- Other publications. Provide opportunities for trainee to:
- Serve as first author on review articles and/or commentaries on cancer-related topics
- Participate in collaborative research/writing that will earn the trainee co-authorship on primary research papers or review articles
- IDP. Meet with trainee to update IDP at least once a year.
- Reinforce participation of trainees in program activities. Support and encourage trainee participation in coursework, workshops, seminars, retreats, and career development activities (e.g. GPS-STEM).
- Communication skills. Provide mentoring to improve trainee’s scientific communication skills by reviewing trainee talks before and after presentation and making sure trainees engage in scientific writing
- Fellowships. Work with trainees to prepare competitive fellowship applications. Support participation in fellowship writing workshop.
- Networking. Ensure trainee attends at least 1 scientific meeting a year, ideally one that you will also attend. The IDCR program provides financial support for meeting attendance.
- Accountability. Attend 1 meeting a year with trainee and IDCR program co-mentor (predoctoral students). Facilitate meeting of postdoc trainees with IDCR Postdoc Mentoring committee.
- Junior preceptors will be expected to participate in a mentoring workshop, all training faculty are welcome to participate.
Support IDCR Training Program
- Regular attendance at IDCR events. Consistent faculty participation is critical for program success and always noted as extremely important to trainees in program surveys.
- Research-in-Progress Symposia. Training faculty should plan to attend each quarter. Attendance at 2/3 each year is required to remain in good standing.
- Attend biennial retreat. Please plan on attending all retreats when you have a supported trainee. All faculty may attend even if they do not have a supported trainee at that time.
- Acknowledge T32 support on all publication: The research reported in this publication was supported by the National Cancer Institute under Award Number T32CA009054
- Complete progress reports (via RedCap platform (ICTS)) and surveys in a timely manner.
- Serve on IDCR committees and review panels when requested.
- Remain in contact with trainees for 15 years to allow tracking

Note: It is possible to be re-appointed for a second year, provided the following conditions are met:
- Completion of required coursework
- Attendance at required seminars/meetings.
- Timely submission of progress reports, mentor and co-mentor reports.
- Satisfactory research progress.
- Postdoctoral fellows submit applications for extramural fellowships in the first year.
