The Training Program for Interdisciplinary Cancer Research curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in basic cancer biology while developing trainees’ knowledge of clinical/translational science and their professional skills.

Predoctoral Students

Coursework

  • Cancer Biology I (M217A): offered every winter, often already completed by predocs
  • Cancer Biology II (M217B): offered spring quarter 2022 and 2024
  • Clinical Cancer for Basic Scientists (M218): offered fall quarter 2021, 2023
  • Journal Club (M293): required every quarter, meets once a week
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (MMG 250): predocs take MMG 250 in first year, needs to be refreshed after 4 years (can use ICTS workshop)
  • NIH Fellowship writing course (UNST 231): offered every spring quarter

Fellowship

  • Application for F30/F31 fellowships strongly encouraged.

Postdoctural Students

Coursework

  • Clinical Cancer for Basic Scientists (M218): offered fall quarter 2021, 2023
  • Journal Club (M293): required every quarter, meets once a week
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (MMG 250): needs to be taken every 4 years (can use ICTS workshop)
  • NIH Fellowship writing course (UNST 231): offered every spring quarter
  • There is an option to audit Cancer Biology I and II based on prior experience and training

Fellowship

  • All supported postdocs are required to apply for an NIH F32 fellowship and/or private foundation fellowship in their first year in the program

All Trainees

Seminars/Meetings

  • Quarterly Research-in-Progress mini-symposia (2 h)
  • Bi-annual trainee retreat (2 days every other year)
  • Annual Campus Wide Symposium for Basic Cancer Research (May 7, 2022)
  • CRI-Sponsored seminars (approximately 10 per year)
  • Trainees must register with GPS-STEM and should attend specific events of interest to them

Recommended Clinical Activities

  • Membership in a Disease-Oriented Team (DOT) of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Clinical shadowing of an oncologist
Goal Progress

Progress Tracking and Development

Each trainee must prepare or update their IDP prior to appointment.

Predoctoral students

  • Choose a co-mentor from among the T32 training faculty (ideally a member of your advancement and/or thesis committee) with whom you will meet twice a year, once with your mentor and once on your own, to review your progress and your updated IDP.
  • Report Progress via Survey
  • Join LinkedIn group and remain in contact with program for 15 years to allow tracking

Postdoctoral Fellows

  • Meet twice a year with the IDCR T32 Postdoctoral Mentoring Committee to review your progress and IDP.
  • Report progress via Survey.
  • Join LinkedIn group and remain in contact with program for 15 years to allow tracking per NIH mandate
